Yesterday evening, as I was driving home from Gurnee, I listened to a wonderful NPR report on E.B. White (the author of Charlotte’s Web). At the tail end of the story, a poem was read that he had written many years ago for his wife.

Let me share it with you.

The Spider’s Web
The spider, dropping down from twig,
Unfolds a plan of her devising,
A thin premeditated rig
To use in rising.

And all that journey down through space,
In cool descent and loyal hearted,
She spins a ladder to the place
From where she started.

Thus I, gone forth as spiders do
In spider’s web a truth discerning,
Attach one silken thread to you
For my returning.

I just loved that last line and felt charmed by it.
